Course Description:

Health Internetwork provides registered institutions in developing countries free full text access to more than 3000 scientific journals. PubMed is a web interface enabling the users to search MEDLINE, the U.S. National Library of Medicine's premier bibliographic database covering the fields fo medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from than 4,800 biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 other countries. Coverage is world wide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts. Participants will learn the basics and advanced techniques of searching PubMed and retrieving the full text, e.g. through HINARI, PubMed free full text filter, or PubMed Central.

Objectives:

Students will:
- Browse through the HINARI available journals
- Find references on a specific topic by a specific author or in a specific journal
- Apply limits such as language, age groups and publication type to search results
- Apply links to see citations to related articles
- Use LinkOut to obtain the full text via HINARI, free full text limits, and Pubmed Central
- Use PubMed Clinical Queries search filter
- Use MeSH (Medical Subject headings) Browser to identify indexing terms
- Use Single Citation Matcher to verify a reference
- Use MyNCBI to save search strategies, setup e-mail alerts for new content, display links to web resources (via LinkOut), and choose filters that grouop search results

Who Should Attend:

Physicians or scientists interested in a basic introduction to searching the biomedical literature and then obtaining the full articles, e.g. via HINARI.
